Fish, boats, bridges and chocolate

For our first full day in San Francisco we did the full on tourist thing by having a huge breakfast, queuing at Powell Street depot to catch a classic San Francisco cable car and heading to Fisherman’s Wharf.

The cable car was fab – a little surreal after having seen them in films and tv programmes for years but great fun. The blokes who work on the cars banter all the way, making everyone smile. When you see just how steep the hills are it’s amazing how these little wooden cars zip up and down them. It’s also amazing how a state as famously litigious as California happily allows people to hang off the sides of the cable cars – Bob and I did it on the way back and it’s scary!

Fisherman’s Wharf was everything a seaside town in England is: a little bit tacky, loud, colourful and fun. What I loved immediately about it was the music – it’s all over San Francisco but on every street corner in Fisherman’s Wharf musicians were playing jazz, reggae, terrifyingly enthusiastic rock and roll piano (the lady doing this looked like Madge from Neighbours) and even lift ‘Muzak’ without the lift…

And then there was food. We’re fast learning that music and food are the bedrock of everything in this city and Fisherman’s Wharf is no exception. Clam chowder served in hollowed out bread bowls, hot dogs, ice cream and lots of crabs.

Bob and I bought a CityPass which along with covering all our transport also gives us free entry to attractions. One of these was a boat trip out into the San Francisco Bay, under the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz island. It’s definitely my favourite thing so far. The bridge is a lot smaller than you expect it to be, but gorgeous nevertheless. The view of San Francisco from out in the Bay was stunning, too. I’ll post pics later thus week, hopefully but watch twitter for them, too.

Bob had great fun in the Bay Aquarium, especially loving the jellyfish and, oddly, an Opossum (not swimming, thankfully).

We then walked to the famous Ghirardelli Square – set on the site of a former chocolate and mustard factory that then became an entertainment hub and is now a stylish shopping centre with boutique shops and cafes. It has a great, laid-back vibe and is somewhere Nell is definitely going to visit!

It’s fantastic to be walking streets that my main character in book 5 will be seeing and I definitely needed to come here to understand why so many people are in love with this city. San Francisco is a place very at home in its own skin, fiercely proud of itself and so laid-back that you find yourself walking around with a smile…

More soon!

Hello San Francisco!

We’ve travelled for thirteen hours, but Bob and I have finally made it to San Francisco!

It’s quite surreal to be in the city I’ve been researching and the first thing that struck me was how much of it looks like a film set. I’m in no doubt that I’m in America (enormous cars, US flags everywhere) but it feels familiar because of the hours I’ve spent walking its streets on Google Earth and from travel books over the past three months.

I’m going to blog every day while we’re here, to share what we’ve been doing and hopefully my experience of visiting San Francisco for the first time. I’m also seeing the city through Nell’s eyes – my main character in Book 5, who decides to visit San Francisco for an adventure of a lifetime when she is unexpectedly made redundant. I want to show you the city from the perspective of someone falling in love with it for the first time.

We’ve only been here for a couple of hours, but I’ve already found a fantastic location for some scenes of the book – Union Square where we had coffee outside, listening to cable car bells, busking bands and even a throaty bagpiper in the shadow of Macy’s, Tiffany’s and Saks Fifth Avenue as tiny sparrows hopped onto the edge of our table. As introductions go, it was a pretty special way to meet San Francisco.

Now we’re heading out to find a diner before finally getting some sleep. More tomorrow, lovelies!

Miranda Writes 5: Advice for aspiring authors and a big trip!

All this year I will be documenting the writing, editing and publishing of my fifth novel, giving you a unique, behind-the-scenes look at my life as a writer. This week, I announce the third of your suggestions for Book 5! Which piece of VINTAGE CLOTHING will Nell be buying from a store in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district and who will be mentioned in my acknowledgements for suggesting it? Plus, I give my top tips for aspiring authors and tell you where I’m off to very soon

Well, it’s been a bit of crazy week writing-wise, but Book 5 is coming together well. I’ve been writing more about Annie’s neighbourhood diner, where quite a few scenes will be set and some fab supporting cast characters have appeared, each with their own stories. Like Marty and Frankie who dole out their wisdom over enormous pancake stacks, and a pair of star-crossed lovers who don’t even realise their stars are anywhere near each other! There’s also a a bit of a mystery that intrigues Nell – but when she solves it she’s in for So much more than she bargains for…

In this week’s vlog I’m also talking about my advice for aspiring authors, sharing how I came to be a published author and my top tips for getting the most out of your writing. I’ll even give you a bit of sneaky info on my Writing Inspiration Course that I’ll be launching in May this year!

So, ready to discover if your piece of vintage clothing has made it into the book? OK lovelies, sit back, relax and enjoy!

p.s. This week’s You-Tube nominated freeze-frame is entitled, ‘Half-asleep’…

Happy World Book Day!

Happy World Book Day!

Books have been a part of my life for all of my life. I was lucky to be born into a family of book-lovers (book devourers is a more accurate term) and their love of reading and great stories fostered a life-long love of reading and writing in me. As soon as I could read books for myself, I discovered the wonders of Kingswinford Library (my local palace of book dreams) and started an amazing reading journey.

In celebration of World Book Day, here are Ten Books That Changed My Life when I was growing up:

1. A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond

2. The Wombles by Elisabeth Beresford

3. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

4. Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Parker

5. Swallows & Amazons by Arthur Ransome

6. The Great Ghost Rescue by Eva Ibbotson

7. The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton

8.The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein

9. I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith

10. Emma’s Island by Honor Arundel

What are your favourite books from your childhood and teens? Tell me below and one person will win a £20 Waterstones Gift Card!

I have an ITALIAN book trailer!

Just found this – and over the moon with it!

Inizio tutto con un bacio, the Italian version of It Started With a Kiss came out in Italy a few weeks ago. The cover is fabulous – see below – but today I discovered my Italian Publishers Newton Compton have put together a book trailer for it, too!

Here’s the cover:

Chuffed with that!

Miranda Writes 4: What’s this about a diner…?

All this year I will be documenting the writing, editing and publishing of my fifth novel, giving you a unique, behind-the-scenes look at my life as a writer. This week, the second of your suggestions is announced for Book who has suggested the RANDOM QUIRKY OBJECT that will be appearing in Book 5 (along with their name in the acknowledgements)? And what’s so special about the diner I’ve just written…?

Thank you so much to everybody who suggested random objects for Book 5. They were so good, I chose TWO! Both objects will appear in Nell’s cousin Lizzie’s apartment in San Francisco. To recap on the story so far, when Nell Sullivan discovers she’s been made redundant (and the news delivered by her on-off boyfriend Aidan, who she thought she was getting back together with), she refuses to be brought down by the blow. Instead, she blows her redundancy cheque on a two-month adventure to the City of Lights – San Francisco, where her cousin Lizzie lives. Nell, who has always been one to play life safe and never take risks, begins to discover what incredible things can happen when you throw caution to the wind and see where life takes you…

Just before you watch the vlog to find out which two people will be featuring in Book 5, I’d just like to mention this daft thing I’m doing for this year’s Comic Relief Red Nose Day

YES! YOU can be mentioned in an exclusive short story I’m writing for Red Nose Day 2013! Simply SPONSOR ME HERE – any amount – and I’ll mention you! It is slightly crazy because I’m going to work in everybody who sponsors me into the short story. At the moment, I’m thinking it will be a little bit like Love, Actually, where I’ll dream up several stories that work together. Please consider sponsoring me – you’ll be helping Comic Relief do their amazing work with people in the UK and Africa who desperately need our help. Thank you!

And so, without further ado, here’s this week’s vlog… Good luck, everyone!

I debated whether or not to reveal this, but I think it’s something that will encourage you if you’re a writer (and show you how important you are if you are a reader!) Over the past two years that I’ve been filming and sharing my vlogs, I’ve always been as honest as I can about the reality of being a writer.

So find out what my writing resolution is for 2013 and hear how my search for my FutureStars is inspiring me already…

As always, I love answering your questions in my vlogs. I’d love to know what you think of the first vlog of 2013 – and my big news!

Enjoy! xx

Hear an extract of When I Fall in Love – read by me!

As you know I am a bit of a geek when it comes to new online media, so I’ve been having a lot of fun this week after discovering AudioBoo. I’ve recorded one of my favourite scenes from When I Fall in Love especially for you!

The scene is the first official public performance of The Sundaes, a choir my main character Elsie Maynard founds after a chance meeting with Wood Jensen, the former frontman of one-hit wonder 80s rock band Hellfinger. They’ve been asked to sing at the Brighton Carnival – a huge celebration that takes place in the town.

Hope you enjoy it!
